Ahem. I LOVE THE DULCIE BOXER BRIEF PATTERN!

When I started looking into what underwear I wanted to make this year for Bolt Undies Month, I was a little apprehensive. Last year I learned how much fun it is to make underwear – a power move to be honest – but also how sizing can be a bit tricky for anyone but particularly if you're plus size.

Enter Muna and Broad, a sewing pattern company I've been interested in trying for awhile. Based out of Canada, Muna and Broad offer plus size pdf patterns (don't forget that we print in the shop now!) that "have been drafted to ensure a great fit for large bodies." Their pattern, the Dulcie Boxer Briefs, hooked me instantly. First of all, the pattern is marked as 1 out of 5 difficulty (can confirm! SO fun and easy and quick!) and the description of the boxers describes all the things you want in a pair of boxers as a plus size person:

-They're long enough to wear as shorts in the summer.

-They've got a high cut waistband that won't cut into your hips or roll down your tummy.

-There is no elastic in the legs so no chaffing or unwanted pulling/stretching.

The pattern also introduced me to "negative ease", a concept I'd never known about as a sewist. There's a helpful blurb in the sizing description of the pattern about negative ease and blending between sizes. Muna and Broad will even grade a pattern up for you free of charge (apart from the pattern price) if their sizing doesn't go to your size. Now THAT'S how to do size inclusivity.

If you couldn't tell, I already had a bit of a crush on this company before undies month. And if I had had any doubts or reservations at all, they were completely squashed never to be seen again when I actually sat down and made the Dulcie Boxers. I have a learning disability and following printed instructions/ directions is not my strong suit. The Dulcie instructions were so straightforward and didn't lose me once! They even offer a seam finishing alternative (the burrito method, which I did on mine, worked great) if you're not jazzed about the one they've offered in the pattern.

After last year's fun but stressful "3rd times a charm" sizing moment for my underwear make, this year my undies fit beautifully after only my first try! I made them by hand in one night and honestly, I can really tell that the sizing/fit has been pre-tested and drafted with love and skill because the fit is beautiful on my body. I'm going to make several more pairs to wear as shorts this summer! I cannot recommend this pattern and this company enough! MUNA AND BROAD FOREVER!
