Pattern Review: Sunday Picnic Dress

—by Hannah

We’ve had Sew Liberated’s Sunday Picnic Dress pattern in the store for quite some time and I was determined to prove that this dress is more attractive and flattering than the photo on the front. You can make a blouse or dress from this pattern. The entire dress is cut on the bias so it does take quite a bit of fabric for being a faux wrap. Get every bit of fabric it calls for and note that on the back of the pattern it only gives you a yardage amount for 54” fabric but of course another width is fine.

The part that makes this a faux wrap is the bit of elastic under the bust. I imagine that this is the perfect nursing dress. We have a lot of requests for maternity and nursing apparel and this is my new recommendation. Since it’s cut on the bias, it lends itself to a body that is growing fast. Also I noticed that the sizing is bigger than it states which is also good for pregnancy. I took my dress in three times before it fit.

I read another review on this pattern and the seamstress observed that the right side of the bodice was a bit too low. I observed the exact thing but still feel comfortable. If you have a small bust or plan to where a camisole underneath it won’t matter, otherwise I suggest extending the right bodice to give more room for yourself.

I only recommend voile, cotton lawn, something lightweight or Liberty if you really want to treat yourself. This dress is hanging in the store if you want to stop by to see details or even try it on!
