Opportunities to teach and learn in the immigrant and refugee community

A while back we did a fabric drive for a Portland non-profit, IRCO (Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization), that works with our immigrant community in a variety of ways, including sewing classes. I was recently talking with a friend who works at IRCO about their needs and she mentioned they need volunteers to help teach sewing skills, embroidery, etc.

They are looking for a sewing teacher for Tuesday or Wednesday early afternoons (noon -1ish), to teach a group of African elders how to sew and various other crafts (most know how to knit and crochet but would probably love embroidery and other handy crafts). They have a few sewing machines and work with two translators, so language isn’t a problem. If you are interested, please email Lisa at lisaw@irco.org Lisa says, “The elders are a wonderful group and it’s a great way to be exposed to other cultures and directly help immigrants and refugees.”

Another way to learn more about immigrant experiences here in Portland is to check out an upcoming event at IRCO. This event is an opportunity to hear from youth about their experiences growing up as first generation Americans. Check out more details here. The event takes place on Tuesday, September 25th.
